Something that did not immediately occur to me after the Pope’s offer to Anglicans is that this is only made to Anglicans (as I read it). The offer does not extend to the United Church, the Lutherans, the Baptists or others. I would wonder if there is a subliminal kinship with RC’s that is not shared with the other churches. In earlier years I described being Anglican as being Catholic-Lite.
As much of a shock this has been to many of us, I have to credit the Pope with doing something decisive and controversial, something Lambeth seems to be afraid of doing. Will there be a mass exodus? I doubt it as there are some things Roman that most Anglicans could never adapt to.
But there will be unrest at ACoC and TEC headquarters. This is border crossing on a unpresidented scale.
